Trend Alert: Cream of the Crop

The crop top trend that has been seen for several seasons is now taking on a high fashion twist. The new look involves less skin--a sliver of abs seen just between the cropped top and high-waisted bottoms. Celebs are sporting the revamped trend on the red carpet, bringing formality to the flirty summertime look. As long as the styling remains sophisticated and the amount of exposed skin is minimal, the look can be appropriate for a wide variety of occasions.

When trying this out for yourself, DON'T pair a skimpy top with even skimpier shorts-- DO keep the look balanced by maintaining proper coverage on the bottom.

Trend Alert: Grunge Revival

Look familiar? The punk-rock grunge look popular in the 1990's is making an unexpected appearance this fall. While in the past, most people would have laughed at the over-styled trying-too-hard looks of this era, now they seem to be donning distressed jeans and flannel button ups left and right.

The resemblance is seen strongest in the high waisted shorts sported by almost every teenage girl in America. Versions of the summer 2013 staple range from DIY Salvation Army cut-offs to the more expensive Urban Outfitters or American Eagle pairs. All are deemed fashionable when paired with a crop top, bandeau top, or clever graphic tank.

Other trends include skater skirts, distressed pants, leather, chunky black shoes, flannels, and lots and lots of plaid.

The key to this look is not taking the nods to 90s grunge too literally. While we all want to epitomize that "cool rebel punk" girl, it is important not to get carried away. High waisted acid wash jeans are an absolute DON'T, along with scrunchies, side ponies, and fringe bangs. Instead, DO opt for more modernized pieces like a graphic beanie, statement black booties, or a flannel casually cinched around the waist.

New York Fashion What?

September 5-12

When walking through the hallways at Langley, it is common to hear talk about last night's difficult Algebra homework or perhaps the upcoming Homecoming football game and dance. What's not so likely to be heard is gossip about Karlie Kloss's latest Instagram post or how beautiful the dresses in Zac Posen's new Spring/Summer 2014 line were.

So if it's not a huge point of interest for Saxons, you may find yourself wondering, "What's the big deal about New York Fashion Week anyways?"

New York Fashion Week, also known as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, is a week-long gathering of hundreds of designers showcasing their upcoming collections, sponsored by the prestigious German car manufacturer. Founded in 1943, originally called "Press Week", fashion week was created to promote fashion journalism in America during the war when French fashion was not easily accessible to Americans.

This exclusive invitation only event gives designers the opportunity to show their collections to a wide array of distinguished industry insiders, buyers, celebrities, VIP guests, and journalists. For some it is the first step into the international fashion industry, but for others it is a routine part of the job.

Take some time to explore the following websites. Browse through the photos of the new collections, peek at some videos of runway shows, skim some of the articles and decide for yourself...is it worth all the hype?
